It has been not too long since the introduction of AMD Phenom II processors. Since the introduction of these processors into the market, the have given consumers a great choice for their money. Now they have introduced new processors for the Phenom II family in such a short time which indicates that the Phenom II architecture is working out extremely well for AMD.

AMD introduced this two on April 23, 2009:

* AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz at a suggested price of $245 USD
* AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHz at a suggested price of $225 USD

Model Clock Speed BUS Speed / HT Speed L3 Cache Size Cores TDP Socket Price
Phenom II 955 Black Edition 3.20 GHz 2.0 Ghz / 4000 MT's 6 MB 4 125 Watt AM3 / AM2+ / AM2 $ 245 / ~RM 880
Phenom II 945 3.00 GHz 2.0 Ghz / 4000 MT's 6 MB 4 125 Watt AM3 / AM2+ / AM2 $ 225 / ~RM 800

For your information this is a Socket AM3 processor, it's compatible with both Socket AM3 motherboards that support DDR3 memory and Socket AM2+ motherboards that use DDR2 memory.

If you have noticed the Phenom II X4 955 is a black edition model and the 945 is not. AMD Black edition CPU's allows easy overclocking as the multiplier is unlocked.

What's great about AM3 processor is that it can be fitted into AM2+ or AM2 motherboards and you can still use your DDR2 memory before you are ready to buy a new AM3 socket motherboard that supports DDR3.

We wont be comparing the AMD Phenom II X4 945, but we will be comparing it with these two:

* AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition 2.8 GHz
* Intel Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz

Model Clock Speed BUS Speed / HT Speed L3 Cache Size Cores TDP Socket Price
Phenom II 720 Black Edition 2.80 GHz 2.0 Ghz / 4000 MT's 6 MB 4 95 Watt AM3 / AM2+ / AM2 $ 145 / ~RM 500
Model Clock Speed BUS Speed / QPi Speed L3 Cache Size Cores TDP Socket Price
Core i7 920 2.66 GHz 4.8 GT/s 8 MB 4 130 Watt LGA 1366 $ 284 / ~RM 1030

These processors along with the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition is placed basically on the sweet spot of mid range computing which is less that $300.

You might wondering why am I comparing against these 2 with the new AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, well we are going to look at how fast the new AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition against the AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition 2.8 GHz and Intel Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz in games.

Yes games. This review will only be on the games which most of the buyers will be intending to purchase this processors for.

>> Test System Configuration

Well first and formost the setup

We here at NKY Systems did our best to deliver clean benchmark numbers. Tests were run at least three times, results are averages based on those 3 runs.

Well here is how our system is configured:

I must say my emphasis on this review is to use components that most people will buy and not focusing on purely extreme components. Real World baby!

We would like to recommend a power supply of not less than 700 watts for this setup - So that you are crossfire ready :)

Without further a due here it is guys the bechmarks.
Do take note that we are keeping the resolution low because this is a CPU test and we don't want the graphic card being the limiting factor. Enjoy

7. Conclusion – Average Game Performance

Our Conclusion from this gaming test is

Fastest Gaming Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2 GHz

Best Value Gaming Processor: AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition 2.8 GHz

Worst Value for Gaming: Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz

The AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition is the fastest of the three mid range processors tested. It simply beats the Core i7 920 which is more expansive that it is, which is great for the consumers.

The AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition is the best value processor because not only it beats the Core i7 920 at most of the benchmark and priced about 50% lower (OMG), and also overall it is only beaten by the Core i7 920 by only 0.16 average frame rate. How can a processor that cost as much as $300 / RM 1030 be only 0.16 frame rate slower than a $ 145 / RM 500.

Don't get me wrong the Core i7 is a fine processor, but if you are up to gaming and want to spend less, your best choice is the AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition.

If you want the fastest mid range (<$300 / < RM 1000) processor, GET the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition.
